What Is Domestic Violence?

Domestic Violence is abuse by one’s partner or ex-partner. It can be:

Emotional and Verbal

  • Put-downs
  • Name-calling
  • Threats
  • Isolation from family and friends
  • Withholding money or other important belongings
  • Threatening to take children away
  • Using children to spy on the other partner
  • Threatening to hurt the children

Physical

  • Pushing, slapping
  • Punching, kicking
  • Choking
  • Use of weapons

Sexual

  • Unwanted touching
  • Rape
  • Sexual put-downs
  • Affairs
  • Violence can often go in cycles - tension, abuse, honeymoon.
  • Teens often get involved in abusive dating relationships.
  • Teens and adult women are at greatest risk when pregnant.
