For any child living in violence, the basic need for a safe, secure home goes unmet.

Children are victims whether or not the violence is directed at them. Even the witnessing of violence in the home can cause the following symptoms:

   •  Physical complaints (headaches, bedwetting)

   •  Eating problems (eating too much or too little)

   •  Temper tantrums (angry outbursts)

   •  Nervous habits (nail biting)

   •  Sleep problems (trouble sleeping, nightmares)

   •  School problems (poor grades, skipping school)

   •  Attention span problems

   •  Bullying, fighting, defiance

   •  Clinging to parents or teachers

   •  Withdrawal, loneliness

   •  Sadness, self-abuse, suicidal thoughts

   •  Acting too grown-up

   •  Drug or alcohol use or abuse

   •  Running away from home

   •  Violent dating relationships

   •  Acceptance of violence and abuse as normal

   •  Growing up to be victims or abusers.
