For any child
living in violence, the basic need for a safe, secure home goes unmet.
Children are victims whether or not the violence is directed at
them. Even the witnessing of violence in the home can cause the following
symptoms:
Physical
complaints (headaches, bedwetting)
Eating problems (eating too much or too little)
Temper tantrums (angry outbursts)
Nervous habits (nail biting)
Sleep problems (trouble sleeping, nightmares)
School problems (poor grades, skipping school)
Attention span problems
Bullying, fighting, defiance
Clinging to parents or teachers
Withdrawal, loneliness
Sadness, self-abuse, suicidal thoughts
Acting too grown-up
Drug or alcohol use or abuse
Running away from home
Violent dating relationships
Acceptance of violence and abuse as normal
Growing up to be victims or abusers.
